One of the oldest barbecue joints in the USA is still in operation, the Golden Rule opened its doors in Irondale in 1891. Operated by the Williams family, the place was a popular stop for barbecue and beer on what was then the Atlanta Highway. In the 1930s electrician Jabo Stone married Ellene Williams and into the family business. For the next forty years, the Stones operated the Golden Rule. The Stones had no children to carry on their legacy, so in 1969 Jabo Stone approached Michael Matsos about taking over the business. Michael had been in the restaurant business for a few decades already, opening the legendary La Paree Restaurant and then his namesake Michael’s Sirloin Room in downtown Birmingham. Though he didn’t know much about barbecue, Michael saw a good business opportunity in the Golden Rule and took it over in 1969. In the intervening years the Golden Rule has expanded, not only its menu, but its presence throughout Alabama and the South.
Michael Matsos passed away in January 2012. The Kemp Family purchased Golden Rule BBQ in 2022 to continue Michael's Legacy.

RIB GLAZE from GOLDEN RULE BAR-B-Q and GRILL.. This is a perfect match for any type of barbecuing! The flavor of this sauce adds a wonderful smoky sweet flavor with just a little zing from the addition of vinegar and lemon juice. The molasses adds a nice thickness so it sticks to everything you pour it on too. The mesquite flavor is added in with out tasting fake or over done. The addition of the sugar make this sauce caramelize nicely to add that sticky, gooey goodness we all love when it comes to a rich tasting BBQ. I love this sauce!

WHITE SAUCE from GOLDEN RULE BAR-B-Q and GRILL.. This is a mild creamy withe sauce with hits of mayo, onion, garlic, a little horseradish, and a pinch of salt and sugar. The flavor is amazingly different for any type of white meat including chicken, turkey, pork and so much more. This would also be great on any type of sandwich. Its smooth and creamy texture is perfect to pour on and enjoy. I was extremely pleased in the flavor and versatility of this delicious sauce. This would be an excellent sauce to keep on hand to use as a dip, add to coleslaw, sandwiches, chicken salad, fruit salad, over pork, chicken, turkey and so so much more. I am loving the unquietness of this sauce. (this is like a combination of a ranch and mayo)

Onion powder, natural flavoring and spices add a nice kick of flavor to this thinner style sauce. When I think of a southern bbq when they mop on flavor, this is the sauce you will love and enjoy.
